Maltitol is basically 4OglucopyranosylDsorbitol which produced commercially under the trade names such as malty sweet, lesys and sweet pearl. It is half as caloric, does not promote tooth decay that is why it is used to replace table sugar. Furthermore, it carries only 75-90% of the sweetness of sucrose.
Pharmaceutical & Nutraceutical Uses
Polydextrose is extensively used in pharmaceutical and food industries as a replacement product for regular sugar as it carries lower calorie content. It is basically a polymer of D-glucose, sorbitol, and citric acid which is used to replace sugar, to increase the nondietary fiber content of food and to reduce fat content.
